Allium Design System

Our mission is to enable customers and team members to do what they want to do, easily.

Allium enables accessible digital experiences to be delivered more consistently and quickly. It simplifies collaboration between teams through shared resources, community contributions and practices. And empowers team members to focus on solving unique application challenges, and less focus on reinventing standard interface elements.

What is Allium?

The Allium Design System communicates our brand promise through digital experiences. It integrates our brand vision, design principles, code, documentation, and design management. Serving as a single source for digital design guidelines, code patterns, and UI elements. It’s intended for use by TELUS employees and approved partners to build TELUS-branded experiences.

Allium is the evolution of the TELUS Design System (TDS), our previous design system. As TELUS continues to evolve our brand story and social purpose, our new design system helps to deliver the TELUS brand to all digital customer experiences. While there are familiar elements from the previous TELUS Design System, Allium is rebuilt on new technologies to better serve the many needs of our creators in building digital experiences.

You can find more information on upgrading from TDS in Migrating from TDS to Allium.

Why the name "Allium"?

Nature is the cornerstone to the iconic TELUS brand look and feel. The design system embodies the foundation of how that look and feel translates into a digital experience. To unify the relationship between our brand and what that means as an experience, we chose to name the evolution of the TELUS design system after the Allium flower.

The Allium flower speaks greatly to our design system and community as a product of components whose greatness only comes from the sum of all its parts.

How does Allium work?

Allium is built on the TELUS Digital Platform, using the Reference Architecture, which specifies a collection of standards, tooling, and processes (specifically Figma, JavaScript, React, and React Native).

Allium is built on top of the Universal Design System (UDS). UDS provides the tooling and base components which enable Allium. In particular UDS and Allium leverage two core technologies: design tokens and React Native. Design tokens power the Allium palette, and React Native enables the multi-platform capabilities of Allium.

Even though Allium uses React Native under the hood, you don’t need to be familiar with React Native or use it in your applications to use Allium. If you’re building a React application for web, you can consume Allium just like any other react web component library.
